Youssef Rakha is a novelist, poet, essayist, literary critic, journalist and photographer.

His debut novel The Book of the Sultan’s Seal won the 2015 Banipal Saif Ghobash Prize. His third book, Paulo, was longlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction.

Rakha has been at the cutting edge of contemporary Arabic writing but has turned to English recently in the hope of bringing post-millennial Cairo into the larger conversation.

Rakha juggles his writing with his responsibilities at Al-Ahram Weekly. He also edits a bilingual literature and photography blog.

He was among the 39 best Arab writers under 40 selected for the Hay Festival Beirut39 Festival in 2010.
