Two highly acclaimed authors who have tackled this issue head on discuss what it takes to write about people trying to survive in a violent society, how they stand up for their community, what hopes they hold on to – and what happens when a ‘hero’ turns the violence against their tormentors. Mohammad Rabie is the author of Otared, an unflinching and grisly journey to a near-future Egypt riven by corruption and conflict. Ahmed Saadawi is the author of Frankenstein in Baghdad, in which an oddball scavenger stitches together a corpse from body parts and unwittingly unleashes havoc on his city.
